enrich our community by giving back, giving now, and giving forward.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Please read the entire application completely.
Event Background
Art In The Pearl is a nonprofit organization founded and produced by
local artists. Our focus is on promoting the arts, educating the public,
and strengthening a bond with the community.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Art In The Pearl is a Zapplication Festival, dedicated to an on-line digital
application and jury process. Slides and paper applications are no longer
accepted. Please review the tips, FAQs, and imaging techniques found at
www.zapplication.org/imaging_tips.phtml. Use a baseline jpg file format
sized to 1920 pixels horizontal x 1920 pixels vertical.
Applications
Artists may enter in multiple categories for jurying. Artists must submit
separate application and jury fees for each category. Artists wishing to
exhibit work produced in more than one media category must apply with
a separate online user identification, and a separate set of digital images.
Digital Images
Four images are to be submitted for each individual media category
entered by the artist. Images must accurately represent the body of the
artist's work to be exhibited at Art In The Pearl.
Artist Statement
The application requires a description of materials, process, and
technique. Describe the work and process, not your philosophy or
inspiration. This statement (which will be posted in your booth) is part of
our mission to educate the public.
Application Fees
Each application must be accompanied by the $30 jury fee payment.
Applicants may choose to pay online, by credit card, or by check made
payable to Art In The Pearl, P.O. Box 5906 Portland, OR 97228-5906. The
nonrefundable jury fee check will be deposited on receipt.
An artist who is selected by the jury and accepts our invitation to exhibit,
must return the signed contract and booth fee to Art In The Pearl by May
15, 2009. Failure to respond by the deadline may result in revocation of
the invitation and immediate invitation of an alternate from the waiting
list. The applicant is responsible for keeping Art In The Pearl advised of
any changes to mailing and e-mail addresses. Notifications will be sent
by e-mail on or about April 15, 2009.
JURYING SELECTION AND PROCESS
Artist applicants remain anonymous during jurying. All of the jurors will
view each artist's set of four images projected simultaneously in a
horizontal grouping, by means of projectors. The materials, dimensions
for each image, and artist information statements will be made available
to the jury.
Artistic excellence is the sole criteria for selection of exhibitors. The five
jurors will view all artist images at the same time and in the same room.
Scoring is based on originality, design, technical proficiency, and
craftsmanship. All scores are combined and averaged. Art in the Pearl
establishes no quota or entitlement by media category. Decisions of the
jury panel are final.
Jurors for the 2009 show are:
Suzanne Linquist / Jeweler, metal smith
Amanda Blake / painter, printmaker
Victoria Christen / ceramic artist
Melinda Thorsnes / painter, 2D artist
Helga Winter / wood artist
RULES FOR PARTICIPATION
It is our intention to present the highest quality fine arts and crafts
festival. Participating artists’ booths will be visited by our Quality
Assurance Committee to ensure compliance with show standards. It is our
exclusive right and responsibility to remove work that is inconsistent
with or deviates from the style or quality of the juried images.
Noncompliance may result in expulsion and/or ineligibility for future
participation. By applying you agree to abide by the rules, policies and
decisions of Art In The Pearl.
GUIDELINES
* Artists may only display work in the media categories in which they are
accepted. If your display features work from more than one category (ie.
potters who display clay jewelry), you must submit separate applications
for each category.
* Artists must be at least 18 years old.
* Artists must be present during the entire festival.
* Artists may not exhibit the work of other artists.
*Photo identification is required at check-in. Art In The Pearl reserves the
right to close down or remove any booth at which the artist is not
noticeably present.
*Artists must prominently display an Artist Statement describing
materials, process and technique.
*PLEASE NOTE – REGARDING COLLABORATING ARTISTS:
No more than two artists may collaborate on work. Artist teams and/or
collaborators that produce a single product may qualify as a single
exhibitor; however, such a team may not consist of more than two
people. Collaborating artists may submit one application and pay for one
booth, if they collaborate on every piece of work. One of the two artists
must be present during the entire festival.
If you are submitting an application as a collaborating artist/partner, you
must submit both name(s) with the application. Here is how to submit
your application as a collaborating artist - Go to “My Profile” first. Enter
one of the two collaborating artists as the primary contact in the profile
form (this name will always appear first in publications and online if
accepted). After completing the information requested, there is a section
at the bottom of the profile page to enter the collaborating artist name(s).
This information is carried over to the application for purposes of
identifying a collaborative effort. You may not add or change a partner
after the jury.
*Artists are responsible for appropriate insurance and protection of work
and setup. Art In The Pearl will not be responsible for damage to work or
setup due to weather or unrelated incidents.
*Limited edition prints, executed in processes involving hand work by the
artist, will be permitted in the printmaking category.
* At least 85% of display must consist of original artwork created by the
artist. 15% of the display may be reproductions. The reproductions must
be consistent with the style and quality of work represented in juried
images.
* No postcards, note cards, calendars, magnets, stationery, giclee on
canvas, or T-shirts.
* 2-Dimensional reproductions:
All reproductions must be clearly and individually labeled “reproduction”
on the front of each piece, NOT “print”, “offset lithograph” or “giclee”.
* Reproductions must be signed and in editions of no more than 250.
Reproductions must be unframed and displayed in browse bins.
PLEASE NOTE: Regarding reproductions
*When original art is scanned in or digitally uploaded into a computer or
photographed onto film and then printed as a Giclee/ink jet print,
photograph, offset lithograph, photocopy etc., the result is a
reproduction. Any of the above receiving additional modification or
enhancement by the artist are also considered by Art In The Pearl to be
reproductions.
