Event Background
Art In The Pearl is a nonprofit organization  founded and produced by
local artists.  Our focus is on promoting the arts, educating the public,
and strengthening  a bond with the community.

Mission Statement
It’s our mission to produce a festival that presents art, education, and
entertainment in an interactive and comfortable environment.  We will
enrich our community by giving back, giving now, and giving forward.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Art In The Pearl is a Zapplication Festival, dedicated to an on-line digital
application and jury process. Slides and paper applications are no longer
accepted. Please review the tips, FAQs, and imaging techniques found at
www.zapplication.org/imaging_tips.phtml. Use a baseline jpg file format
sized to 1920 pixels horizontal x 1920 pixels vertical.
Applications
Artists may enter in multiple categories for jurying.  Artists must submit
separate application and jury fees for each category. Artists wishing to
exhibit work produced in more than one media category must apply with
a separate online user identification, and a separate set of digital images.
Digital Images
Four images are to be submitted for each individual media category
entered by the artist.  Images must accurately represent the body of the
artist's work to be exhibited at Art In The Pearl.
Application Fees
Each application must be accompanied by the $30 jury fee payment.
Applicants may choose to pay online by credit card, or by check made
payable to Art In The Pearl, P.O. Box 5906 Portland, OR 97228-5906.  The
nonrefundable jury fee check will be deposited upon receipt.   An artist who is selected by the jury and accepts our invitation to exhibit,
must pay booth fee to Art In The Pearl by May 15, 2010. Failure to respond by the deadline will result in revocation of the invitation and immediate invitation of an alternate from the waiting list. The applicant is responsible for keeping their e-mail address updated and current on their zapplication.org profile.  Notifications will be sent via e-mail by April 15, 2010.

JURYING SELECTION AND PROCESS
Artist applicants remain anonymous during jurying.  All of the jurors will
view each artist's set of four images projected simultaneously in a
horizontal grouping, by means of  projectors.   The materials, dimensions
for each image, and artist information statements will be made available
to the jury.
Artistic excellence is the sole criteria for selection of exhibitors.  The five
jurors will view all artist images at the same time and in the same room.
Scoring is based on originality,  design, technical proficiency, and
craftsmanship. All scores are combined and averaged.  Art in the Pearl
establishes no quota or entitlement by media category.  Decisions of the
jury panel are final.
Jurors for the 2010 show are:
Joe Apodaca / jewelry, metal smith
Marla Baggetta / painting, drawing, 2D artist
Gregg Graff /  2D, 3D mixed media artist
Alan Higinbotham / ceramic artist
Kimberly Morris / fiber artist

NEW THIS YEAR
Emerging Artists Program.
Art In The Pearl is featuring a unique opportunity for visual artists who are Oregon or Washington residents.  The Emerging Artist Program offers new artists the opportunity to showcase their talent at one of the nation's premier art festivals.

The Emerging Artist Program is designed specifically for artists who have minimal experience exhibiting and selling their artwork.  Applicants will proceed in the same manner as professional artists and submit images of their artwork through the regular application on Zapplication.org.  The application fee is the same. Upon acceptance, emerging artists will pay a lower booth fee.   Art In The Pearl will provide a tent , electricity, and offer mentoring to help guide the emerging artist through the process of displaying and selling their work.

Artists may only apply as an emerging artist or a professional artist;  but they may not apply to both. Artists who meet the requirements of the Emerging Artist Program are encouraged to apply. Art In The Pearl  reserves the right to pre-screen and research emerging artists to make sure they qualify for this category.

When applying, select 'Emerging Artist' as your medium category. The jury will select the emerging artists separately from the festival artists.

Artists who are beginning their career in the art world are encouraged
to apply. Applications will be accepted through midnight March 15, 2010 at www.zapplication.org. This application fee is $30.
