I often consider myself more of an arborist than a furniture maker. My materials have always come first; my furniture simply serves as a motivating force to continually expand my knowledge and understanding of the forest. The fruit of this investigation is an ever-expanding repertoire of lumber that enables me to create striking visual symphonies of color and texture in my work. I also often incorporate natural forms, such as live edges and weather worn wood, into my work in a manner akin to ornamental carving. When all goes well the materials and my design become inseparable from each other. The design of each piece is then furthered through solid craftsmanship. Each piece is built to last generations with intricate joinery and a keen awareness of the woods seasonal movement. I pride myself in making very functional art.
