TIPS FOR APPLICANTS

Artist Statement:

For the shorter statement think simply; what materials are you using and how?

Ie:  I hand throw unique ceramic vessels and finish with raku firing techniques.

For the longer statement think about delving in a bit, talk about the details, the process and even the inspiration.

I start with a 50 lb solid block of California Bay Laurel. Using only hand tools, I slowly carve away to find the exterior form.  As the piece starts to emerge I use Japanese keyhole saws, chisels and rasps to shape the core of each sculpture.  My inspiration comes from the organic forms I find in sea weed or twisted ribbon.  From the raw wood a sculpture emerges – each piece takes about 50 hours to create.  Finished works are hand-sanded and polished with beeswax to bring out the natural tones and highlights in the wood.  Each sculpture is one of a kind.

Artwork image tips:

  • Be sure the body of work you are applying with is cohesive and represents your point of view as an artist.
  • Jury images should be clean and simple – focusing on the artwork only, white or neutral backgrounds read best with jurors.
  • Images should be well lit and easy to see.
  • If you don’t have a booth shot please submit an image taken of a grouping of works representative of the works to be exhibited at the show.

Do not submit images with identifiable signage, photos, names or business names of the artist(s). Do not titled submitted images with your name, and please do not stand in your booth shot.

APPLICATIONS WITH IDENTIFYING INFORMATION WILL NOT BE SHOWN TO THE JUDGES.

Acceptance to the Emerging Artist Program will be determined by a combination of jury scores and committee review.

We are excited to welcome and mentor 4 new artists each year!

We wish you luck with your application and long and successful creative careers.
