Description:

These individually carved pieces are first thrown on the potter’s wheel or rolled out and constructed. When they reach the leather hard stage (firm but still moist) I draw the design on the surface and then carve each piece. After they have completely dried, I lightly sand them. Next, I paint them with terra sigilatta, a refined clay slip. (I mix a white base and add ceramic stains to get my base colors. I then mix these to create my own palette. After the pieces are painted, they are fired for the first time, making the color permanent. I then apply either a copper wash or black glaze to the entire surface and wipe it off leaving it in the carved and recessed areas.) Pieces are then fired for a second time. I use terra cotta, an earthenware clay body.
